Through my design context have identified these categories as the major sub genres of the science fiction genre. These categories will cover all the main aspect of science fiction and should cover the definition very well.
DEFINITION OF SCIENCE FICTION
"A genre of fiction that deals with imaginary but more or less plausible content as future settings, futuristic science and technology, space travel, aliens and paranormal abilities. Exploring the consequences of scientific innovations is one purpose of science fiction, making it a "literature of ideas."
