Bespoke Typeface For Southgate Centre, Bath

The beautiful city of Bath, my home. Recently the centre has seen some of baths uglier buildings that were developed in the 1960's demolished. In its place and elegant and modern shopping district has been created in an attempt to boost baths economy.

These images show the shopping centre and signage for the new shopping centre. It also shows the new typeface that has been developed specifically for the signage.

The typeface is trying to mix the old classical culture of bath with more modern aspects of 21st century life. In my opinion I cant say this has really worked. The typeface is unbalanced and the weight seems to be uneven making the type look like it is moving around on the page. The typeface was subject to many negative reviews but was given the go ahead anyway.

The signage however, is something that works really well. It is clear, modern and understandable. All it needs now is a typeface to back it up.
