Penguin, Pelican & Puffin Books

Penguin Books

Penguin books was founded in 1935 by Sir Allen Lane and V.K Krishna Melon. Penguin revolutuionised publishing through cheap paperbacks that were sold at Woolworth's for sixpence. The books contained novels that were mostly fiction with the purpose of entertaining the reader. Its simple design also became iconic and Penguin soon became an international success. It is now the flagship imprint of the world wide Penguin Group and is owned by Pearson PLC.

Pelican Books

Pelican books were founded two years after Penguin books with a focus on eduction rather than to entertain. The first Pelican book entitled 'The Intelligent Woman's Guide to Socialism and Capitalism was released in 1937 and adopted the same style as the Penguin books but with a blue colour instead of orange.
Pelican Books was dissolved in 1990 after a decline in sales.

Puffin Books

Four years after the creation of penguin books and two after Pelican books Puffin books were released for children. The book below is one of the first releases by Puffin Books in 1941. Traditionally Puffin books adopted a red colour for their titles, however more modern books have adopted bright illustrations for the books which are more suitable for children.
