Space Opera
Science fiction that is based often in the distant future where mankind ha inhabited many planets. This often focuses on relationships between races and control over regions of space. Star Trek was considered to be a 'Space Opera'. This also plays on the term 'Soap Opera' and relationships between characters are still very important in the unfolding of plot lines.
Apocalyptic
Science fiction that is set in a post apocalyptic earth, where the planet has been destroyed by disease or by nuclear war. This theme of science fiction was very popular during the cold war period and often features the U.S.A and the soviet Union as the main culprits for the destruction of the planet.
Cyberpunk
A sub genre of science fiction that developed in the early 80's. Main story lines are often centralised around various groups of hackers who use cyber space to cary out there wishes. Often set in near future in over developed metropolises such as Tokyo. Very popular in japan.
Dystopian
Political and social science fiction that is based around the idea of a totalitarian form of government that represses and exploits people within its governing body. People are made to feel like they are living in a world of paradise and freedom where actually this is far from the truth. often set in the near future where the population and resources of earth are reaching a critical stage.
Classic
Science fiction in its early form. The Victorian era saw many writers such as Wells and Verne produce literature that highlighted new technological advancements and discoveries that were being made at the time. This sparked the science fiction genre and the writings of plausible events that were held in the imagination of creative minds.
